Game Tasting Day
This event is on Saturday 16th November from 10am to 4pm and is being held in the courtyard at the Cowdray Farm Shop.
The Tasting Day is the culmination Cowdray Game Week, which runs from Monday 11th November to Sunday 17th November. Game Week celebrates and promotes game as a wild, healthy and high protein meat.
During the week and on the Game Tasting Day, visitors are encouraged to enter a prize draw by filling out a form available from the Farm Shop & Café. The winner will go out early one morning with Cowdray Deer Manager Jason Griffin to learn about Cowdray’s deer management, returning to the Farm Shop & Café for a Cowdray breakfast.
Customers will be able to try products which accompany game including Savoury Jellies by Game On, award-winning sauces by Nonya Secrets and hedgerow fruit-based liqueurs by Sloemotion. There will also be various offers on the Cowdray butcher’s counter to include venison, partridge, pheasant and guinea fowl. The butchers will also be on hand to talk to customers about cooking game including rabbit and Partridge.
Cowdray’s Deer Manager Jason Griffin will be at the Farm Shop from 10am to 4pm. He will be at a stand with examples of antlers, literature about his activities and rifles and shells for observation. Jason, who is one of the country’s few full-time deer managers, will be available to talk to customers about Cowdray’s sustainably sourced wild Estate venison. On the day, customers will also be able to buy Cowdray Estate partridge and pheasant shot on the Estate.
There will be a butchery demonstration at 10.30am and a second demonstration at 12.30pm.
There will be two cooking demonstrations at 11.30am and 1.30pm by Cowdray Farm Shop Café Head Chef Ben Jupp who will cook various game products. He will demonstrate making a casserole and cooking the meat on a BBQ.
Simon O’Leary, who runs Hownhall, Cowdray’s Shooting School, will be at the Game Week Tasting Day from 10.30am. Simon will be based in the courtyard and will be talking to customers about his business and the tie ins with the wider game industry. There is also the opportunity to try your hand at shooting a few clays.
Gun dog trainer Louie Robertson, from Train That Dog, will be holding a “Gundog Clinic” throughout the day. Louie and her team can work with visiting dogs as well as their own and will be giving lots of tips and mini demonstrations regarding gundog training for retrievers and spaniels.
Train That Dog will also be demonstrating gun dog work with their own dogs at 12pm.
The Cowdray Ghillie Mark Williams will also be on hand to talk about fishing on the Cowdray stretch of the River Rother and customers will be able to have a go casting. There will also gun dog trials on the grass by the Farm Shop.
As part of Game Week, the Cowdray Recipe Card is a Venison Sausage Toad in the Hole. These cards can be picked up from the Farm Shop and the Café throughout the month of November.
The November Supper Club has a game-themed menu. This takes place on Friday 15th November, the night before the Game Week Tasting Day. Numbers are limited to sbook soon to avoid disappointment.
