Life on the Estate: October

October

Autumn on the Estate brings a transformation of the countryside. The lush greenery of summer gives way to vibrant hues of gold, amber and deep red. Cowdray embraces this special time of year with a celebration of Autumn including Apple Day and Run the Seasons.

Cowdray’s third Apple Day took place this month at the Farm Shop with visitors enjoying the opportunity to juice home-grown apples in a press. There was also music and the chance to sample some apple themed treats make by the Farm Shop team including toffee apples, apple turnovers and apple cakes alongside tastings from local suppliers.

Earlier in the day, runners gathered for the first much-anticipated Run the Seasons race. Despite the challenging conditions, around 300 runners were in good spirits as they set off towards Bexley Hill, through some ancient and thick woodland before returning on a different route exposing the golden autumnal colours on the South Downs.

The Walled Garden Wedding Showcase took place in mid-October giving couples as well as their friends and family the chance to explore the hidden delights of The Walled Garden as well as gain inspiration for a magical wedding.

Florists, caterers, marquee companies, photographers and many more carefully chosen exhibitors were on hand along with Cowdray’s experienced wedding team to discuss everything couples need to know about their special day. The event was well attended and with candles lit in the rooms, there was a warm and cozy feel to the day. The event showed that The Walled Garden is a special venue at all times of year.

The Evening Dining series also started in late October at the Farm Shop Café with visitors being able to enjoy a seasonal feast inspired by local ingredients. Each evening in our series there will be a focus on an ingredient that comes straight from Cowdray Estate. In true autumnal spirit, the October evening focused on apples and celebrating this delicious fruit for its gentle sweetness and versatility.

Its also been a busy end of October at Cowdray Ruins. The Visitor Centre opened its doors in mid-October and there have been a flurry of events including Charcoal and Pastels at Cowdray Ruins, Autumn Fun at the Cowdray Visitor Centre and the Strange and Mysterious Tales of Cowdray.
