Alister Maynard MBE (1903-1976)

Alister Maynard was educated at Gresham’s School, Holt and Sandhurst. He served in the army for ten years in India, resigning his commission in 1933. The previous year he met Molly Wingfield in India and on their return to England in 1933 they were married and took a flat in Berkeley Square.

Immediately he established himself as a designer of modern luxury furniture and furnishings, opening in 1935 his showroom at 73 Grosvenor Street, London W1. From 1935 until the outbreak of the war in 1939 he received many important commissions. From Indian and English Patrons including Courtaulds, Derek Peachey and Sir Edward Hulton.

Maynard was a gifted painter. Fundamentally self taught, though he studied for a brief period at Chelsea School of Art as a young man, he painted allegorical portraits and ‘trompe l’oeil’ painting. He was deeply interested in the myths and religious beliefs of the world and they were often portrayed in his paintings.

When Marina Cowdray recently found a treasure trove of his artwork, unseen for 40 years she rightly decided that her grandfather’s work should be enjoyed by a wider audience. His paintings now hang at locations across the estate including the Golf Club and Capron House and now we are delighted to be able to offer the facility to buy these prints online.

On the website the images appear with a Cowdray watermark. The watermark is not visible on the artworks when purchased.

The prints are printed on matt card and sent out by Royal Mail rolled up in tubes.

The cost of packaging and posting is £6 per print.
