The Shooting School at Cowdray Estate, have been recognised as one of the top shooting schools in the country at the 2019 Great British Shooting Awards. The awards, held in Birmingham in conjunction with the British Shooting Show, on Friday 15th February 2019 saw Hownhall presented with the silver award in the ‘Shooting Ground’ category.

The inaugural Great British Shooting Awards showcased products, organisations and people that inspire the industry. Awards were determined by the general public’s vote, combined with opinions of industry expert judges.

The accolade is recognition of the experience and vision of Hownhall Directors Simon O’Leary and Benita Wright. Hownhall, newest ground listed as a ‘Shooting Ground’ finalist, was established in 2017. The shooting school Directors have embraced their surroundings creating the perfect woodland shooting experience. The ground caters for novices through to established game shooters. The undulating terrain has enabled Hownhall Shooting to create a range of targets that best replicate live game, this combined with client led focus sets Hownhall apart from competitors.

Alexandra Henton, Deputy Editor of The Field commented “Hownhall offers a super combination of game-centric stands and convivial company. Set on a part of the Cowdray Estate, the ground was nominated for it’s no nonsense, sporting approach and useful focus on the stands and shooting available; targets not tearooms. An ideal place for a game shot to keep their eye in during the off-season.”

Cowdray’s CEO, Jonathan Russell was delighted to hear of the award; “For Hownhall to achieve this award after just two years in operation is exceptional. Country sports and education are important for the preservation of the British Countryside, which is precisely what Cowdray strive to achieve through sustainable management. To lead the way with Hownhall Shooting School is further confirmation of Cowdray’s progessive outlook also extending across Estate businesses.”

Hownhall Co-Founder, Simon O’Leary said: ” I was always very clear about the product and the environment that I wanted to create. I knew immediately that Cowdray offered the key elements for success, which we have mirrored throughout the school, enabling us to achieve national recognition in 2019. It is a great honour to receive this award; this will only drive us to achieve higher standards and continued customer satisfaction.”
