The Walled Garden and Cowdray House Q&A

With two wedding venues at the heart of the Estate, Cowdray has something for every couple to consider for their perfect wedding day. To find out more about both Cowdray House and The Walled Garden, we caught up with Sales Executive Amber de Savary, and Wedding Sales Executive Hannah Fullagar to answer some of the top FAQ’s received about hosting a wedding at Cowdray.

Cowdray House

Located at the heart of the Estate, Cowdray House lends itself to weddings and celebrations. Whether you are planning an extravagant weekend-long celebration or a more intimate affair, we guarantee that you and your guests will leave with memories that will last a lifetime.

After winding down the sweeping driveway, guests are welcomed by manicured gardens and the breath-taking views over the rolling hills of the South Downs that surround the house. With three licensed ceremony locations, 22 luxurious bedrooms and bathrooms, opulent reception rooms, a bowling alley, and an indoor and outdoor pool, Cowdray House is a magical location for hosting your wedding or celebration.

The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden at Cowdray is a truly magnificent location for saying ‘I do’.

A historic hidden gem, located alongside the stunning backdrop of Cowdray Ruins, The Walled Garden is licensed for ceremonies in the beautiful gardens underneath the wooden pergola, in the Castle Room and Courtyard Room, and can accommodate up to 130 guests.

Q: Is The Walled Garden next to Cowdray House?

A: Whilst The Walled Garden and Cowdray House both sit on the Cowdray Estate, they are located on different parts of the Estate and therefore are separate venues.

Q: Can we get married in the garden at Cowdray House?

A: Yes! Cowdray House is licensed for wedding ceremonies both inside and outside. The Summerhouse on the south lawns and the fountain at the front of the house both make a beautiful location for a ceremony.

The Summerhouse

Q: Is there a wet weather option for The Walled Garden, or is it just an outdoor space?

A: The exclusive hire of The Walled Garden includes two spacious reception rooms and a first-floor suite as well as the garden itself, so there’s plenty of space to celebrate indoors if the weather isn’t on your side

Q: Are both venues children friendly?

A: Yes, absolutely, children are welcome at both venues, we just ask that they are accompanied by a responsible adult.

Q: Can you recommend caterers who can cater for dietary restrictions?

A: All of our approved caterers at both venues are experienced in catering for dietary requirements so you will be in good hands whoever you choose! Do let us know if you have any particular requirements and we’ll do our best to point you in the direction of a caterer we believe will best meet your needs.

Q: Is there a bar at The Walled Garden?

A: There is not a fixed bar in the venue, but this is something your caterers would typically set up and run for you. Alternatively, some couples prefer to bring in an external bar company – please speak to us for more information

Q: Is there a bar at Cowdray House?

A: There are lots of options at Cowdray House as to where you can have your bar because we don’t have a permanent one set up. Lots of couples hire in external companies to run this for them on the evening. We are very happy to recommend previous suppliers for this is this is something that you are interested in!

Q: Can we make a weekend of it or is it a one day only hire?

A: The exclusive hire of Cowdray House includes 22 bedrooms, making it ideal for a full weekend celebration!  The Walled Garden does not have accommodation on site, but we can certainly help with local accommodation options if you’d like to come back and continue your celebrations a little longer!

Q: What is the capacity for The Walled Garden?

A: The Walled Garden can accommodate up to 100 for a seated meal and has a standing capacity of 130.

The Castle Room

Q: What is the capacity for Cowdray House?

A: We can seat a maximum of 150 in Buck Hall, with standing receptions of around 180 – or larger numbers with a marquee on site.

Q: Are there any noise restrictions?

A: Here at Cowdray House our evening celebrations can extend as late as 2am inside. Outside you are more than welcome to have music until 11pm

Q: Who is responsible for setting up and breaking down the décor?

A: The majority of decor is usually taken care of by your suppliers – between your florist, caterers, and production team this tends to cover a lot of the set up! Once we know more about your décor plans we can advise.
