Polo Academy

The Polo Academy provides a platform enabling new players to step into the very heart of the sport following instruction by leading professional coaches and players. The Academy aims to take new players to instructional chukka level after just 10 hours of private lessons. This programme creates a game scenario with professional players playing alongside to explain, guide and create moves.

Professional coaches

Heading up the facility is registered polo coach Guy Verdon (pictured), who has played polo for over 40 years and coached all over the world including Argentina, New Zealand, the USA, Spain, Dubai and Brunei. Guy’s teaching career has seen him coach numerous Pony Club members, through to individual adults, pupils have included a former English Captain and a James Bond director. Guy is a registered HPA Coach and holds a clear DBS check.

Former 8 goal England International polo player, Alan Kent, hosts the Academy at his polo facilities at Madam’s Farm. Alan’s extensive polo career has seen him play at all levels worldwide and he is a regular coach for the England team.

Did you know?

  •  A polo pitch is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide and has two goal posts 8 yards apart.
  • The match is divided into chukkas, with each chukka lasting 7 minutes to 7 1/2 minutes.
  • Ponies must be changed after each chukka.
  •  The bell is rung at the end of each 7-minute period.
  • Ends are changed after each goal is scored, or at half-time if no score by then.
  • Teams have four players each, No 1 and No 2 are forwards, No 3 the pivot position (usually the best player in the team) and No 4 (or Back) the goal defender.
  • Polo matches are divided into the following:

– Low Goal (lasts approximately one hour and has four chukkas)

– Medium Goal (lasts approximately 75 minutes and has five chukkas)

-High Goal (lasts approximately 90 minutes and has six chukkas)
